The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will proceed with nationwide mass protests, defying court orders, as the government failed to address its demands. In Adamawa, on 30 July, some youths looted government-owned grain reserves and private stores. They reportedly started the looting spree at the grain warehouse located at PZ Roundabout, a stone’s throw away from the Yola International Airport. SaharaReporters reported that all the grain reserves on Numan Road and other strategic locations were looted. Armed policemen were reported to have engaged the youths as they attempted to crack down on the rampage.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s ongoing mass protest and Adamawa youths looting government-owned grain reserves and private stores reflect public discontent. The ruling party’s gloating and the perceived comfort of government officials in imposing economic pressure on the public are increasingly irritating the Nigerian people. The events could escalate if the Tinubu Administration fails to change its unsympathetic handling of economic policies and public concerns. Though demands that the government return the pump price of petrol to the status quo are a pipe dream that will not happen, we suggest the government should focus on increasing the minimum wage to an affordable amount for the government and meaningful to workers. It is also important for the government to carefully assess the reasons behind the protest and work towards addressing them. Ignoring or downplaying the unrest in the northern region could further escalate national insecurity. The government needs to proactively engage with the citizens, understand their concerns and implement policies that address the economic hardships they face.
